BSkyB 1H net up 8 pct despite drop in ad revenue (AP)

LONDON ? British Sky Broadcasting PLC saw its profits rise 8 percent in the first half of its financial year as an increase in customer numbers helped offset a drop in advertising revenue.

Britain's biggest broadcaster by revenue said Tuesday that its net profit in the six months ending 2011 rose to 441 million pounds ($692 million) from 407 million pounds a year earlier.

Revenue at the company, which is 39 percent-owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., was up 6 percent to 3.4 billion pounds, while the dividend was raised 5 percent to 9.2 pence per share.

The company's solid results and dividend hike helped BSkyB shares rally 3.2 percent to 687 pence in early trading in London. Sky shares have been hit hard this year, partly because of the fallout from the hacking scandal involving the News of the World tabloid, which was part of News Corp. until it was shut down. One of the major impacts of the scandal was News Corp.'s shelving of its bid to buy the shares in BSkyB it doesn't already own.

BSkyB's results were helped by a 321,000 increase in customer numbers during the period, while subscriptions to various products, notably broadband and telephone, increased by 772,000.

Despite its further advance, there are concerns over the company's prospects, which is chaired by James Murdoch.

Steve Liechti, analyst at Investec Securities, is cautious about BSkyB because of possible competitive and regulatory problems.

He noted that auctions for football rights, which have been a key to building BSkyB, will be up for renewal in upcoming quarters. The company also faces growing competition in subscription video on demand.

Alongside its results, BSkyB announced that it was planning a cable-based broadband offering with unlimited usage, delivered via the cable network of telecoms company BT PLC.

Chief Executive Jeremy Darroch said he expected a tough year ahead, given Britain's sluggish economy and the squeeze on household incomes.

"No consumer business can be immune to these conditions and we will manage any short-term headwinds as they emerge," Darroch said. He added that BSkyB was planning more original productions and is launching a channel dedicated to Formula 1 auto racing.

Madonna Unveils Colorful MDNA Cover Art

Funky cover, which features Madge with bright red lips, reflects 'high-energy' vibe of the album.

Madonna's <i>MDNA</i>

Madonna may have gone stripped down and black-and-white for her "Give Me All Your Luvin' " single art, but for her MDNA album cover, she's on the other end of the color spectrum.

A nod to her love of all things colorful and disco, the singer is truly expressing herself in the glamorous, deconstructed photograph full of bouncing colors. In the photo, Madge cocks her head up, her curly hair pulled back. She's wearing lots of mascara, bright red lipstick, a choker and a silky bright pink top. The photo has some kind of broken mirror filter over it, giving it a funky, dance-queen vibe. She dropped the art on her Facebook page.

Madonna recently described MDNA as "high-energy" and this particular visual certainly fits that vibe.

Madonna releases "Give Me", the first single off the album, on Friday, along with the video. She's set to take the stage at the Super Bowl on Sunday.

In a photo posted on TMZ.com, Madge's halftime stage features a series of lights that spell out "Vogue" set into the floor. She's rumored to be performing the 1990 song at the show. The stage setup also includes bleachers, which may have something to do with the fact that the performance may have a cheerleader theme.

Madonna is also rumored to be taking the stage with Cee Lo Green and LMFAO as well as her "Give Me" pals, Nicki Minaj and M.I.A., the latter of whom opened up about taking the stage with Madonna in a recent interview.

"I'm gonna be performing with Madonna and Nicki Minaj ... If you're gonna go to the Super Bowl, you might as well go with America's biggest female icons," M.I.A. explained. "As musicians, we're two women and we represent two opposite sides of the world. If we can come together on a piece of music or something like the Super Bowl, I feel like that's actually a cool thing to see this year because it's getting silly out there."

What do you think of Madonna's album cover? Sound off in the comments section below!

NYS Disability Insurance

Just like life insurance, two fundamental kinds of disability insurance are standard disability insurance (Your organization takes care of these) and private disability insurance (You need to buy these). However, private disability insurance is always costlier than standard disability insurance.

?

As a result, an individual must vigilantly assess his or her company?s plan and come to a decision whether or not he or she needs additional coverage. You can begin by looking for options available with company?s group policy. Some plans permit you to acquire supplementary coverage, so that you can get a cover to recompense more than two third of your wage via that policy often at rates lower than what you would get if you were to hunt for a private plan.

?

Generally, you will find variations in laws across the states. In New York, if an individual is disabled by a sickness or wound when not on the job, NYS disability insurance offers short-term provisional cash assistance to those who are eligible. Such assistance seeks to replace loss of pay due to sickness or wounds incurred. New York State even offers cover for disabilities occurring during pregnancy. Note that injuries, disabilities or sickness arising out of or during service are covered separately under another law.

?

All employers come under the ambit of this law. They need to provide disability insurance benefits to all employees that have successfully completed their probation period. Under the NYS disability insurance, the employer can then purchase group plans from insurance company of its choice. There is also an option to become a self-insurer.

?

If your employer fails to provide for you such a policy, it would amount as an offence under the NYS disability insurance law. When your company?s standard disability insurance seems inadequate, you may want to go for additional cover on your own. When purchasing private disability insurance in the state of New York, here are a few things to bear in mind.

?

In fact, you will come across many terms in a policy document having meanings that may not be clear. Before finalizing a policy, ensure that you have selected options that suit you the best. If you do a bit of research about various New York State disability insurance companies and plans and chose wisely before committing anything, it can result in significant benefits later. Many a times, your agent may not be that knowledgeable about various terms and conditions mentioned. Read the fine print and ensure that you get all your questions or doubts resolved. Contact a company?s customer care representative. Here, you can be sure to find accurate information and guidance over all the policy details.

?

Most disability insurance policies in New York State cover you for a specific period only. There are both short-term and long-term plans. In addition, a company may also provide an option for you to receive disability benefits for the rest of your life. No doubt, these are costlier than a limited term policy. You need to use your own judgment and arrive at a choice. Note that while your company?s group policy will cease when you stop working there, but your private policy is for life. Buying one now is a smarter choice.

?

Another important consideration is the fact that costs in a metropolitan city like New York are likely to be on higher side in the future, whereas your policy takes into account your current income for arriving at a benefit amount. You need to ask if the insurance firm provides any options for you to increase these income levels in the future.

?

There is a waiting period after the date of your sickness or disability before you can start receiving your benefits. Most insurance firms will allot you default duration. Since this affects your premium amount, you need to decide on your waiting period duration. Some people opt for shorter waiting period to ensure safety. Those who keep same savings aside for an emergency can choose to lower their premiums by opting for a longer waiting period.

?

Lastly check out clauses that leave out your pre-existing health conditions or addictive habits. Often a company will not pay you if it discovers that you already contracted an illness or condition at the time of signing up. Thus, it makes sense to purchase such a policy when you are young, healthy and not suffering from any ailment.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer were the maids of honor at Sunday's Screen Actors Guild Awards, where their Deep South drama "The Help" won them acting prizes and earned the trophy for overall cast performance.

Davis won as best actress and Spencer as supporting actress for "The Help," while Jean Dujardin was named best actor for the silent film "The Artist" and Christopher Plummer took the supporting-actor award for the father-son tale "Beginners."

The wins boost the actors' prospects for the same honors at the Feb. 26 Academy Awards.

In "The Help," Davis and Spencer play black maids going public with uneasy truths about their white employers in 1960s Mississippi.

"I just have to say that the stain of racism and sexism is not just for people of color or women. It's all of our burden, all of us," Davis said, accepting the ensemble prize on behalf of her "The Help" co-stars.

Accepting her best-actress award, Davis singled out two performers in the audience who inspired her early in her career: "The Help" co-star Cicely Tyson and Meryl Streep, Davis' co-star in the 2008 drama "Doubt" and one of the nominees she beat out for the SAG prize. Streep had been nominated as Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady," a role that won her the dramatic actress award at the Golden Globes over Davis.

A French film star who is a newcomer to Hollywood's awards scene with "The Artist," Dujardin played a silent-era screen idol fallen on hard times as talking pictures take over in the late 1920s.

"I was a very bad student. I didn't listen in class. I was always dreaming," Dujardin said. "My teachers called me 'Jean of the Moon,' and I realize now that I never stopped dreaming. Thank you very much. Thank you for this dream."

Plummer would become the oldest actor ever to win an Oscar at age 82, two years older than Jessica Tandy when she won best actress for "Driving Miss Daisy."

Backstage, Plummer joked when asked if he would like to win an Oscar, an honor so elusive during his esteemed 60-year career that he did not even receive his first Academy Award nomination until two years ago, for "The Last Station."

"No, I think it's frightfully boring," Plummer said. "That's an awful question. Listen, we don't go into this business preoccupied by awards. If we did, we wouldn't last five minutes."

Spencer, a veteran actress who had toiled in small TV and movie parts previously, had a breakout role in "The Help" as a brassy maid whose mouth continually gets her in trouble.

"I'm going to dedicate this to the downtrodden, the under-served, the underprivileged, overtaxed ? whether emotionally, physically or financially," Spencer said.

On the television side, comedy series awards went to "Modern Family" for best ensemble; Alec Baldwin as best actor for "30 Rock"; and Betty White as best actress for "Hot in Cleveland."

"You can't name me, without naming those other wonderful women on 'Hot in Cleveland,'" the 90-year-old White said. "This nomination belongs to four of us. Please, please know that I'm dealing them right in with this. I'm not going to let them keep this, but I'll let them see it."

The TV drama show winners were: Jessica Lange as best actress for "American Horror Story"; and Steve Buscemi as best actor for "Boardwalk Empire," which also won the ensemble prize.

For TV movie or miniseries, Kate Winslet won as best actress for "Mildred Pierce," while Paul Giamatti was named best actor for "Too Big to Fail."

Before the official ceremony, the Screen Actors Guild presented its honor for best film stunt ensemble to "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2." The TV stunt award went to "Game of Thrones."

The winners at the SAG ceremony often go on to earn Oscars. All four acting recipients at SAG last year later took home Oscars ? Colin Firth for "The King's Speech," Natalie Portman for "Black Swan" and Christian Bale and Melissa Leo for "The Fighter."

The same generally holds true for the weekend's other big Hollywood honors, the Directors Guild of America Awards, where Michel Hazanavicius won the feature-film prize Saturday for "The Artist." The Directors Guild winner has gone on to earn the best-director Oscar 57 times in the 63-year history of the union's awards show.

The guild's ensemble prize, considered the ceremony's equivalent of a best-picture honor, has a spotty record at predicting what will win the top award at the Oscars.

While "The King's Speech" won both honors a year ago, the SAG ensemble recipient has gone on to claim the top Oscar only eight times in the 16 years since the guild added the category.

Though "The Help" won the ensemble prize this time, "The Artist" and George Clooney's family drama "The Descendants" are considered stronger contenders for the best-picture Oscar.

Both "The Artist" and "The Descendants" also were nominated for writing and directing Oscars, categories where serious best-picture candidates generally need to be in the running. "The Help" missed out on nominations in both of those Oscar categories.

Mary Tyler Moore received the guild's lifetime-achievement award, an honor presented to her by Dick Van Dyke, her co-star on the 1960s sit-com "The Dick Van Dyke Show."

Zimbabwe doctors report 800 typhoid cases (AP)

HARARE,Zimbabwe ? An independent doctors' group in Zimbabwe is reporting 800 cases of the bacterial disease typhoid in a recent outbreak.

No deaths have been reported in the past three weeks. The Zimbabwe Association of Doctors for Human Rights said Sunday that the nation's troubled coalition government lacked urgency in dealing with public health woes.

In a statement, the group said that amid heavy rains clean water supplies were still irregular or "completely absent" in most impoverished townships in Harare. It said burst sewers were left unattended and meat and fish were sold on streets nearby.

A cholera outbreak in 2009 blamed on the collapse of water, sanitation and prevention services in Zimbabwe killed more than 4,000 people.

Steve Jobs, Superhero

jobs-superhero3When I was a kid, I read tons of superhero comic books. I fantasized about superpowers, but the storylines about heroes with massive Achilles? heels really held my attention the most. They saved the world but had screwed up personal lives, made lots of mistakes, and often acted like complete assholes. In retrospect, I related to their flaws. And, probably not coincidentally, my favorite characters exhibited core weaknesses I had experienced: Spider-Man (immaturity), Iron Man (overconfidence/hubris), and Wolverine (rage). Ironically, when the character?s weakness comingled with the superpower, it would often spur them to succeed against impossible odds.

Costa Cruises offers compensation to rescued passengers (Reuters)

ROME (Reuters) ? Costa Cruises has offered 11,000 euros ($14,500) in compensation to each of the more than 3,000 passengers aboard its liner that ran aground and capsized two weeks ago, Italian consumer groups said on Friday.

The offer is an attempt by Costa Cruises to limit the legal fallout of the accident off the coast of Italy.

Each passenger on the Costa Concordia will also receive a refund on the cruise and the costs of their return home. The offer applies to all passengers, whether child or adult, who suffered no physical injuries.

Injured passengers will be dealt with individually.

Sixteen bodies have been recovered after the 290-metre long cruise liner, with more than 4,200 passengers and crew on board, struck a rock near the Tuscan island of Giglio.

The ship's captain, Francesco Schettino, is under house arrest and is blamed for causing the accident by steering too close to the island's shore.

Costa Cruises' U.S. parent company Carnival Plc is already facing legal action for compensation. Those accepting Friday's offer will have to agree to drop all future litigation, and receive payment within seven days.

Codacons, a consumer group which did not participate in the negotiations, is collecting names for a class action suit to be filed in Miami requesting 125,000 euros for each passenger.

Carlo Rienzi, president of Codacons, said the offer was insufficient and urged passengers to see a doctor to check whether they had suffered psychological trauma.

John Arthur Eaves, a U.S. personal injury lawyer, is urging passengers to file individual lawsuits in the United States. Eaves represented families of some of those killed when a U.S. military jet struck and severed cables holding skiers in a cable car in northern Italy in 1998, killing 20.

"The class action is not the right tool for this case," Eaves told Reuters Television. "In this case people need to be treated like individuals. Everyone in this boat had different damages."

But Roberto Corbella, head of Italy's association of tour operators, and who helped Costa negotiate the offer with the consumer protection groups, urged passengers to accept it.

"Lawsuits have uncertain outcomes, they take a long time, there are legal costs, and some studies indicate that it's not at all certain that passengers would get more than the company is offering," he said.

"DANGEROUS CONDITIONS"

Crew member Gary Lobaton has already filed a lawsuit against

Carnival in a U.S. district court. His lawyers said in his court filing that he was not aware of the "dangerous conditions" of the cruise ship until it was too late to abandon it safely.

Keiko Guest, a photographer from Atlanta, was a passenger on the Concordia and she said she may consider the offer as long as the equipment she lost was covered by it.

"If they would return my stuff to me alongside this money offer I'd feel better," she said. "I don't know how appealing it will be for some people" who lost $10,000 rings.

Passengers have complained the evacuation was chaotic, with some left waiting in lifeboats for two hours before being able to leave the ship. Several bodies were found by divers in submerged evacuation assembly points, wearing life vests.

On Thursday, Italy's top-ranking Coast Guard official, Marco Brusco, said Schettino lost "a precious hour" which made evacuating the ship more difficult.

Had the order been given earlier "the lifeboats could have been launched calmly, people could have been reassured," Brusco said in Senate testimony.

As divers searched the submerged parts of the ship, Dutch salvage team SMIT finalized preparations to remove fuel from its tanks.

"We could finish today the process of inserting valves on six tanks," said a spokesman for the civil protection agency, which is in charge of operations. That would open the way for fuel removal to begin on Saturday or Sunday.

Many other toxic materials are still onboard the Concordia, including a ton of chlorine to disinfect pools, insecticides, and detergents, according to a list of products distributed by Italian officials. ($1 = 0.7601 euros)

Possible new treatment for Rett Syndrome

ScienceDaily (Jan. 27, 2012) ? Researchers at Oregon Health & Science University have discovered that a molecule critical to the development and plasticity of nerve cells - brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) - is severely lacking in brainstem neurons in mutations leading to Rett syndrome, a neurological developmental disorder. The finding has implications for the treatment of neurological disorders, including Rett syndrome that affects one in 10,000 baby girls.

The new discovery is published online in Neuroscience and is expected in the print issue of Neuroscience in March.

Using a mouse model of Rett syndrome, the OHSU team found that mutant neurons in the brainstem fail miserably at making BDNF. When normal neurons are faced with a respiratory challenge, such as low oxygen, they dramatically increase the production of BDNF, whereas mutant neurons do not.

According to the National Institutes of Health, Rett syndrome is estimated to affect one in every 10,000 to 15,000 live births and almost exclusively girls because it is caused by an X-linked gene mutation. In addition to severe problems with motor function, other symptoms of Rett syndrome may include breathing difficulties while awake.

"The new finding, coupled with our previously published data that show BDNF is involved in normal maturation of neuronal pathways controlling cardiorespiratory function, could play a significant role in the development of a treatment for Rett syndrome," said Agnieszka Balkowiec, M.D., Ph.D., principal investigator and associate professor of integrative biosciences in the OHSU School of Dentistry; and adjunct assistant professor of physiology and pharmacology in the OHSU School of Medicine. To conduct this research, Balkowiec partnered with John M. Bissonnette, M.D., professor of obstetrics and gynecology, and cell and developmental biology in the OHSU School of Medicine.

Additional study authors include: Anke Vermehren-Schmaedick, Ph.D., OHSU Department of Biomedical Engineering; Victoria K. Jenkins, B.A., who is currently pursuing her doctorate at Boston University; and Sharon J. Knopp, a research assistant in Bissonnette's lab.

The study was supported by grants from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health; March of Dimes; and International Rett Syndrome Foundation.

Nintendo officially announces Nintendo Network, promises personal accounts for Wii U

Nintendo officially announces Nintendo Network, promises personal accounts for Wii U
Nintendo's third quarter financial briefing just spilled the beans on the recently spied Nintendo Network, causing Nintendo fans everywhere to collectively sigh, "It's about time." Company head honcho Satoru Iwata says the network will offer "competitions and communication among users, as well as the sales of digital content," and in the case of the Wii U, will introduce personal user accounts. Iwata stopped just short of confirming that the Nintendo Network will end the company's policy of tying downloaded titles to Nintendo hardware, rather than individual users, but mentioned that it packed an infrastructure that supports not only add-on content, but fully downloadable retail games as well.

"This concept was built into the design of the Nintendo 3DS, and we already have the necessary infrastructure," Iwata said, "We will prepare the same infrastructure for the Wii U. However, we have not decided the concrete timing of when we will start it." Iwata pointed to Mario Kart 7's community building features and DLC offerings in the upcoming Theatrythm Final Fantasy as an early look at how the Nintendo Network is trying differentiate itself from the outfit's existing Nintendo Wi-Fi connection services. Hit the source link to read Iwata's briefing for yourself.

Mitch Daniels Response To State Of The Union: Text

Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels is giving the Republican response to President Barack Obama's State of the Union address on Tuesday night.

(Click here to read the president's prepared remarks. Click here for live blog coverage of the event.)

Below, Daniels' remarks as prepared for delivery, which were posted on House Speaker John Boehner's website ahead of the governor's speech.

"The status of 'loyal opposition' imposes on those out of power some serious responsibilities: to show respect for the Presidency and its occupant, to express agreement where it exists. Republicans tonight salute our President, for instance, for his aggressive pursuit of the murderers of 9/11, and for bravely backing long overdue changes in public education. I personally would add to that list admiration for the strong family commitment that he and the First Lady have displayed to a nation sorely needing such examples.

"On these evenings, Presidents naturally seek to find the sunny side of our national condition. But when President Obama claims that the state of our union is anything but grave, he must know in his heart that this is not true.

"The President did not cause the economic and fiscal crises that continue in America tonight. But he was elected on a promise to fix them, and he cannot claim that the last three years have made things anything but worse: the percentage of Americans with a job is at the lowest in decades. One in five men of prime working age, and nearly half of all persons under 30, did not go to work today.

"In three short years, an unprecedented explosion of spending, with borrowed money, has added trillions to an already unaffordable national debt. And yet, the President has put us on a course to make it radically worse in the years ahead. The federal government now spends one of every four dollars in the entire economy; it borrows one of every three dollars it spends. No nation, no entity, large or small, public or private, can thrive, or survive intact, with debts as huge as ours.

"The President's grand experiment in trickle-down government has held back rather than sped economic recovery. He seems to sincerely believe we can build a middle class out of government jobs paid for with borrowed dollars. In fact, it works the other way: a government as big and bossy as this one is maintained on the backs of the middle class, and those who hope to join it.

"Those punished most by the wrong turns of the last three years are those unemployed or underemployed tonight, and those so discouraged that they have abandoned the search for work altogether. And no one has been more tragically harmed than the young people of this country, the first generation in memory to face a future less promising than their parents did.

"As Republicans our first concern is for those waiting tonight to begin or resume the climb up life's ladder. We do not accept that ours will ever be a nation of haves and have nots; we must always be a nation of haves and soon to haves.

"In our economic stagnation and indebtedness, we are only a short distance behind Greece, Spain, and other European countries now facing economic catastrophe. But ours is a fortunate land. Because the world uses our dollar for trade, we have a short grace period to deal with our dangers. But time is running out, if we are to avoid the fate of Europe, and those once-great nations of history that fell from the position of world leadership.

"So 2012 is a year of true opportunity, maybe our last, to restore an America of hope and upward mobility, and greater equality. The challenges aren't matters of ideology, or party preference; the problems are simply mathematical, and the answers are purely practical.

"An opposition that would earn its way back to leadership must offer not just criticism of failures that anyone can see, but a positive and credible plan to make life better, particularly for those aspiring to make a better life for themselves. Republicans accept this duty, gratefully.

"The routes back to an America of promise, and to a solvent America that can pay its bills and protect its vulnerable, start in the same place. The only way up for those suffering tonight, and the only way out of the dead end of debt into which we have driven, is a private economy that begins to grow and create jobs, real jobs, at a much faster rate than today.

"Contrary to the President's constant disparagement of people in business, it's one of the noblest of human pursuits. The late Steve Jobs - what a fitting name he had - created more of them than all those stimulus dollars the President borrowed and blew. Out here in Indiana, when a businessperson asks me what he can do for our state, I say 'First, make money. Be successful. If you make a profit, you'll have something left to hire someone else, and some to donate to the good causes we love.'

"The extremism that stifles the development of homegrown energy, or cancels a perfectly safe pipeline that would employ tens of thousands, or jacks up consumer utility bills for no improvement in either human health or world temperature, is a pro-poverty policy. It must be replaced by a passionate pro-growth approach that breaks all ties and calls all close ones in favor of private sector jobs that restore opportunity for all and generate the public revenues to pay our bills.

"That means a dramatically simpler tax system of fewer loopholes and lower rates. A pause in the mindless piling on of expensive new regulations that devour dollars that otherwise could be used to hire somebody. It means maximizing on the new domestic energy technologies that are the best break our economy has gotten in years.

"There is a second item on our national must-do list: we must unite to save the safety net. Medicare and Social Security have served us well, and that must continue. But after half and three quarters of a century respectively, it's not surprising that they need some repairs. We can preserve them unchanged and untouched for those now in or near retirement, but we must fashion a new, affordable safety net so future Americans are protected, too.

"Decades ago, for instance, we could afford to send millionaires pension checks and pay medical bills for even the wealthiest among us. Now, we can't, so the dollars we have should be devoted to those who need them most.

"The mortal enemies of Social Security and Medicare are those who, in contempt of the plain arithmetic, continue to mislead Americans that we should change nothing. Listening to them much longer will mean that these proud programs implode, and take the American economy with them. It will mean that coming generations are denied the jobs they need in their youth and the protection they deserve in their later years.

"It's absolutely so that everyone should contribute to our national recovery, including of course the most affluent among us. There are smart ways and dumb ways to do this: the dumb way is to raise rates in a broken, grossly complex tax system, choking off growth without bringing in the revenues we need to meet our debts. The better course is to stop sending the wealthy benefits they do not need, and stop providing them so many tax preferences that distort our economy and do little or nothing to foster growth.

"It's not fair and it's not true for the President to attack Republicans in Congress as obstacles on these questions. They and they alone have passed bills to reduce borrowing, reform entitlements, and encourage new job creation, only to be shot down time and time again by the President and his Democratic Senate allies.

"This year, it falls to Republicans to level with our fellow citizens about this reality: if we fail to act to grow the private sector and save the safety net, nothing else will matter much. But to make such action happen, we also must work, in ways we Republicans have not always practiced, to bring Americans together.

"No feature of the Obama Presidency has been sadder than its constant efforts to divide us, to curry favor with some Americans by castigating others. As in previous moments of national danger, we Americans are all in the same boat. If we drift, quarreling and paralyzed, over a Niagara of debt, we will all suffer, regardless of income, race, gender, or other category. If we fail to shift to a pro-jobs, pro-growth economic policy, there will never be enough public revenue to pay for our safety net, national security, or whatever size government we decide to have.

"As a loyal opposition, who put patriotism and national success ahead of party or ideology or any self-interest, we say that anyone who will join us in the cause of growth and solvency is our ally, and our friend. We will speak the language of unity. Let us rebuild our finances, and the safety net, and reopen the door to the stairway upward; any other disagreements we may have can wait.

"You know, the most troubling contention in our national life these days isn't about economics, or policy at all. It's about us, as a free people. In two alarming ways, that contention is that we Americans just can't cut it anymore.

"In word and deed, the President and his allies tell us that we just cannot handle ourselves in this complex, perilous world without their benevolent protection. Left to ourselves, we might pick the wrong health insurance, the wrong mortgage, the wrong school for our kids; why, unless they stop us, we might pick the wrong light bulb!

"A second view, which I admit some Republicans also seem to hold, is that we Americans are no longer up to the job of self-government. We can't do the simple math that proves the unaffordability of today's safety net programs, or all the government we now have. We will fall for the con job that says we can just plow ahead and someone else will pick up the tab. We will allow ourselves to be pitted one against the other, blaming our neighbor for troubles worldwide trends or our own government has caused.

"2012 must be the year we prove the doubters wrong. The year we strike out boldly not merely to avert national bankruptcy but to say to a new generation that America is still the world's premier land of opportunity. Republicans will speak for those who believe in the dignity and capacity of the individual citizen; who believe that government is meant to serve the people rather than supervise them; who trust Americans enough to tell them the plain truth about the fix we are in, and to lay before them a specific, credible program of change big enough to meet the emergency we are facing.

"We will advance our positive suggestions with confidence, because we know that Americans are still a people born to liberty. There is nothing wrong with the state of our Union that the American people, addressed as free-born, mature citizens, cannot set right. Republicans in 2012 welcome all our countrymen to a program of renewal that rebuilds the dream for all, and makes our 'city on a hill' shine once again."

Ecuador cracks down on lesbian 'torture clinics'

By msnbc.com staff

Women?s rights groups are claiming victory in their efforts to get the government of Ecuador to shut down underground clinics that they say used torture techniques to try to ?cure? lesbians.

Fundacion Causana, Taller de Comunicacion Mujer and Artikulacion Esporadika, a coalition of Ecuadorian women?s rights activists, started an online campaign on Change.org after working with women who had escaped what they call ?torture clinics.? Many of the women cited physical and psychological abuse, including verbal threats, shackling, days without food or water, sexual abuse, and physical torture in efforts to make them ?straight.?

?After years of campaigning about the practice of torture rehab clinics that claim to cure homosexuality, the Ecuadorian government has committed to deconstructing the belief that homosexuality is a sickness,? Fundacion Causana representative Karen Barba said in a press release issued by Change.org on Tuesday. ?Using Change.org, we were able to achieve victory in closing down ex-gay torture clinics.?

The online petition to close the clinics drew more than 100,000 signatures from across the world.

Earlier this week, President Rafael Correa also appointed Carina Vance, a lesbian and a gay-rights activist, as the new health minister. Vance is former executive director of Fundacion Causana.

Vance succeeds Minister of Health Dr. David Chirriboga, who before stepping down last week announced the government would investigate and close all such clinics in the country, launch a national advertising and awareness campaign against homophobia, and develop a crisis hotline for victims, according to Change.org.

?The Ministry of Public Health, the governing body of Ecuador?s health sector, is committed to strengthening the measures and institutions that contribute to the eradication of abusive practices such as the supposed treatment of homosexuality,? Chirriboga was quoted as saying. ?The Ecuadorian government rejects such practices as criminal and in direct conflict with the individual freedoms granted to all our citizens.?

Thirty so-called reparative therapy clinics were shut down by Correa's government in September after pressure from activists, including Vance, who will continue the campaign against remaining clinics as health minister.

A story on cnn.com on Thursday highlighted stories of alleged abuse by women who visited the clinics. The woman told CNN that her family contacted a center that promised to ?cure? her of her homosexuality when she was 23.?

The woman, now 28, said she was kept in handcuffs for more than three months in a ?therapeutic? center called Puente a la Vida, or Bridge of Life. Concha says she endured all kinds of demeaning and abusive treatment during the 18 months she was held there, according to CNN.

The clinic has since been shut down. CNN said efforts to?reach its former director for a comment?were unsuccessful.

Under?Vance's leadership as health minister, three raids have already taken place in the Quito area, and dozens of women have been rescued, CNN reported.

Screen Shot 2012-01-23 at 10.12.00 AMThe problem of how to find relevant content on the web has yet to be solved on a mass scale. You've got cyborg news aggregators like Techmeme and Google news and social aggregators like Reddit and Digg competing with Twitter and the Facebook Newsfeed, all of them trying to get you the news that you want to know, as fast as possible. The Seattle-based Wavii, which has been in super stealth mode until now, takes a different approach to the problem. The startup uses natural language processing and machine learning to parse far corners of the web and bring users personalized content based on their Facebook Likes and feedback. Upon entering Wavii via Facebook Connect, you are asked to pick a combination of 12 topics that pertain to you and rinse, repeat. Video: Paterno son: Scandal didn?t tarnish dad?s legacy

>> a public viewing will be held this afternoon for joe paterno ahead of a private funeral on wednesday. the legendary penn state football coach died at the age of 85 on sunday, less than three months after being diagnosed with lung cancer . we are joined now by his son jay paterno. good morning. let me start by expressing my condolences to you and your family.

>> thank you, matt. good morning to you, too.

>> how's everybody doing?

>> well, it's been a little bit of an up and down ride since sunday -- really since friday when it looked like joe was going to pass. i think our family is very, very strong. we have leaned on each other and had support from so many people, students, alums, notes and cards from everywhere. it helped sustain us .

>> i want to ask about the stress and strain your dad was under during the last couple of months. obviously he was let go as the head coach of penn state in the wake of the jerry sandusky scandal. a lot of critics felt your dad should have done much more when he learned information about mr. sandusky. what toll did it take on him and what toll has it taken on your family?

>> well, i think the big thing with my dad is through the last couple months you really got to see his true character in terms of even with all the things that were happening to him there was never a situation where he sat around and felt bad for himself. he was very positive with us about the direction he wanted the rest of his life to go and how he wanted to continue to build penn state and also to make sure justice was done for the victims involved. so that really didn't take much of a toll on him. he's a strong individual and he's passed that on to us. we try to live the same way we he did.

>> i read a quote of his and i wonder if this shed light on the last couple of months. one of his great quotes is losing a game is heartbreaking, losing your sense of excellence or worth is a tragedy. do you think in the wake of what happened over the last couple of months he lost a little of his sense of excellence?

>> absolutely not. one of the things joe has always told us is there is a difference between success and excellence. success is how others perceive you. excellence is something very personal. it is a standard you uphold. throughout his life he's done what he believed was right given the facts he had in front of him at the time. he did what he thought was right. i don't think there is a question in his mind he didn't lose a sense of excellence. obviously that's something he held very dear.

>> people now debate his legacy. your dad had 17 grandchildren. i think the youngest is a young girl , just about 2 1/2 years old.

>> yeah.

>> when she starts to learn about your dad, about joe paterno what do you want her to know about him?

>> one of the great things about my dad has been his integrity, loyalty, honesty and his fairness. i hope in his life when the youngest grandchild gets old enough to understand his career as a coach or mentor, so much more than winning games. i hope she understands that. i hope my children get to understand that he was -- this was an incomparable life, a life that he really lived up to the values he espoused.

>> jay paterno, my condolences to you and your family. thanks for joining me this morning.

>> thanks, matt.

>> we're back in a moment. this is "today" on nbc.

The 'Choking Game': 1 in 7 College Kids Has Tried It (Time.com)

College students aren't necessarily renowned for their good judgment, and a new study reinforces that, finding that nearly one in seven co-eds has played the Choking Game, which is every bit as dangerous as it sounds.

Also called the Fainting Game, Pass Out, or Space Monkey, the Choking Game can be played individually or in groups. It consists of manually choking yourself or others, sticking a plastic bag over the head, tying a string around the neck or hyperventilating, all in search of a few seconds of euphoria. (See TIME's health and medicine covers.)

Researchers at The Crime Victims' Institute at Sam Houston State University surveyed 837 students at a Texas university and found that the behavior, which works by cutting off blood flow to the brain in order to induce a high, was frighteningly commonplace:

?16% of students said they'd played the game, and three-quarters more than once
?On average, students first played the game at age 14
?Males were more likely to have played than females
?90% of students who had played the game learned about it from friends, and most students said they first played in a group

Why in the world would kids engage in this potentially deadly behavior? In a word, curiosity. They may also not realize it has the potential to be just as deadly as illegal drugs. The good news is that learning that a number of teens and college students have suffocated to death from playing the Choking Game helped deter students from playing. Parents, talk to your kids. And schools can play a role too: related research found that 90% of parents think that including information about the dangers of the game in school health and drug prevention classes is a smart idea.(MORE: For Teens Who Cut, Going Online Can Sometimes Help)

As the study notes:

"This 'game,' as it is often called, does not require obtaining any drugs or alcohol, is free, and can go undetected by many parents, teachers, physicians, and other authority figures. Most importantly, many of those who engage in this activity, do not understand that the practice can be just as deadly as the illegal substances youth have been warned against."

PIP Implant Scandal May Lead To Insurance Scheme in Britain ...

PIP implant scandal is yet not over, not at least in Britain where Sir Bruce Keogh who is heading the review into PIP implants has advised an insurance scheme for patients. As per Keogh, the insurance scheme for cosmetic surgery patients would help them a lot.

The Health Secretary, Andrew Lansley, appointed Keogh, who is also the Medical Director of the NHS. Andrew Lansley has asked him not only to look into the matter but also to come up with suggestions which could be used for the benefit of people who can face PIP implant difficulties again.

Till now, it has not been decided that whether the government would approve Keogh?s suggestion or not as so far no reported case has come to them which could reflect any mishappening in this regard. Still, the NHS has come forward to fulfill their moral duty and has announced that they would be providing free surgeries to breast cancer patients so they could get rid of those non-medical silicone implants.

As per the NHS report, they would providing free surgeries to 3,000 breast cancer patients, but there are 40, 000 women in total in Britain which have gone for PIP implants. Though the NHS has asked three other private firms which has conducted rest of the operation to step up to their moral duties, none of them has assured that they would conduct free removal surgeries.

The three medical places which have performed breast implants operations are Transform, the Harley Medical Group and Surgicare. All three of them have declined to perform free surgeries for their patients.

In this scenario if Keogh?s insurance scheme is approved then patients would derive a lot of benefit and would get further protection from such incidences. Talking about his suggestion, he said, "Captured the flavour of where we want to go?.

Video: Trouble for Romney?

>> is this mitt romney 's worst week ever? he started the week under pressure po release his tax records. then he reveals he pays 15%. financial disclosure forms show he earned $375,000 in speaker fees. then his campaign admits he has investments offshore. now, he can no longer claim he won the iowa caucuses . his campaign is calling it a virtual tie. let's bring in michael smerconish who is a msnbc contributor. not quite david letterman 's top ten, but this is not a good week, including the events of today for mitt romney .

>> you're right. i think that many of those trials and tribulations are going to be engulfed by the newt gingrich story. two hours sbo s into a conversation about nothing but all the news, this gingrich story is the one people most want to discuss. that's the buzz today.

>> what do you make of the fact that rick santorum is calling it a victory? needs to pick up steam in south carolina . mitt romney says it's a virtual tie. when it was the other way around, he said a win is a win. how would you define this week for him if it's not the worst week ever, what is it?

>> i think it's been a bad week for mitt romney and largely of his own doing. some of these things are intangibles that you can't control. what your rattling off relative to romney, whether it's the poor performance or the way l they handle the tax returns , which you always knew was going to be an issue. there's been instance after instance where they didn't get ahead of the curve, and they should have. santorum probably woke up thinking he would have a dewey defeats truman moment. instead, so many other things are happening whether it's the ex-wife interview. whether it's per riry getting out and going for gingrich . santorum hasn't gotten that shining moment.

>> you bring up the ex-wife interview with marianne gingrich . we know in iowa the super pac supporting mitt romney really went after newt gingrich 's character and beat him up to the point that he was all by wiped out of the numbers there. might we see more of that. mitt romney is in a desperate situation. does his super pac pick up on this interview and his it to their benefit?

>> i don't think they do. i don't think they have to. i think this is going to get such traction in the next 24 hours . now there are reports that the washington post may be coming with its own story about marianne gingrich you sit back and let the free media do your work for you because you don't have to spend the money. i think abc made the right call. i know that some are critical of their running the story. if i were a south carolina voter, and they sat on this, and sunday morning i woke up having voted and then they released it, i would feel like i'd been senator censored.

>> newt gingrich is dedpleflecting to his daughters. he says my daughters will talk more about that and even said they might appear on the " today show ". what do you make of that as a parent?

>> i hate to see them get thrown into the cross fire . it's like deal with this issue, if you can, but keep the kids out of it.

>> they're adults. they're not little kids. thank, michael.

Medicare Changes Every Boomer Needs To Know About For 2012

www.foxbusiness.com:

It seems as if the Medicare program is always changing, and it can be hard for baby boomers to keep up with the modifications and deadlines.

Every year more than 1.5 million baby boomer enroll in the government-sponsored health insurance program, and the big problem right now is that the number of people receiving Medicare benefits is substantially higher than the number of people paying into the system.

Man convicted of killing Ga. girl found dead (AP)

ATLANTA ? A 20-year-old maintenance worker who this week pleaded guilty to molesting and killing a 7-year-old girl was found dead of an apparent suicide in his prison cell Thursday, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections.

Ryan Brunn was found unresponsive at 4:15 p.m. at the state prison in Jackson, said spokeswoman Kristen Stancil. Brunn was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5:37 p.m., Stancil said in an email to The Associated Press.

Brunn pleaded guilty on Tuesday to killing Jorelys Rivera on Dec. 2. Her body was found in a trash compactor at the Canton apartment complex where she lived and he worked. At the hearing, Brunn explained his actions in chilling detail before apologizing to Rivera's family. A judge then sentenced him to life in prison without parole.

Earlier Thursday, Canton officials said the city's police chief had resigned after a scathing report found he took a "laid back" approach to the search for Rivera in the north Georgia town.

Chief Jeff Lance stepped down after the 17-page review revealed his department of about 50 officers violated several of its own policies and made many mistakes in the search for Rivera, said city manager Scott Wood.

Rivera was reported missing at her apartment complex about 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 2. Days later, Brunn was charged with her killing.

A call to Lance for comment was not immediately returned.
